Quiz: The Data-Filled Seas

See what you know about the dense network of fiber-optic cables crisscrossing the ocean floor to connect the world.
Satellites often get most of the credit when it comes to moving data, but the vast undersea network of fiber-optic cables traversing our oceans is a critical but often forgotten part of the global communications network. Mechanical Engineering’s member-exclusive September cover story profiled the undersea cable industry, which is transmitting data more cheaply and efficiently than satellites.

The number of deep sea cables is increasing, as is their role in keeping the world connected. These cables have multiple protective layers of coatings and armoring, while lasers on one end fire rapidly down thin glass fibers to receptors at the other end.
